Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Gallery

The full version of the software now costs just $299 (sans control panels), even as Blackmagic has built it out with editing and compositing capabilities. And DaVinci Resolve Studio is now included with the BMPCC 4K at no additional charge. The 5-inch touchscreen has a great viewing angle, and that’s a good thing because the monitor does not move. Because the screen is larger, no movement isn’t as bad as it could be, but it’s still lame when you want to shoot low or high angles or in situations where there is loads of glare on the screen.

Post Production Friendly File Formats!

During my time on the show floor, I was surrounded by brilliant minds pushing the boundaries of content creation–from Hollywood studios to passionate home creators dreaming of becoming the next industry giants. BM cameras are full of caveats and I speak as an URSA owner that shot two solid movies on them. I love the Panasonic cameras for what they do, and I've been a user since 2009 with the GH1, but this is another class of camera. For some jobs, it's hard to beat the Panasonics, but sometimes, a box camera is simply much more practical. I like how the announcement says the product will likely have much worse shutter performance than a sony product. The Pyxis includes a series of mounting points and comes in a choice of three lens mounts, now including the Leica L mount.

The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K works with industry standard 17 and 33 point 3D LUT files, or you can work with the built in LUTs such as Extended Video, Film to Video, Film to Rec.2020 and more. The Pocket Cinema Camera works with industry standard 17 and 33 point 3D LUT files, or you can work with the built in LUTs such as Extended Video, Film to Video, Film to Rec.2020 and more. Keeping the image sensor and internal components cool is incredibly important because it directly affects image quality. Cooler sensors can run at higher frame rates and capture cleaner images with less noise than a hot sensor. That’s why Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is designed with a patented two-way thermal management system that features liquid cooling.

And it's a cine camera, you use focus as a story telling mechanism. If you want great autofocus you're probably better off with a Sony prosumer cam... No, It’s for those people with access to MILLIONS of EF mount lens already cheaply available. The ones who don’t feel a need to buy into a new system right now.Maybe their next model will come in a mount that works for you. Millions of people with lenses that can't be used, or unlikely to buy lenses for a dead mount system.

Record Direct to External USB‑C Flash Media Disks

Supports recording optional portrait mode metadata for all resolutions in Blackmagic RAW and H.264 Proxies. Blackmagic has finally moved this system to a more versatile mirrorless mount with the adoption of the L-Mount on the 6K FF. This means you can adapt all the DSLR and cinema glass you want while also using native L-Mount glass. Also, the full-frame sensor has a built-in optical low-pass filter which the Pocket 6K Pro does not. On the other hand, the 6K Pro has built-in ND filters while the full-frame 6K does not.

The Color Of Light

VFX artists are in for a treat too, with a multi-poly rotoscoping tool, expanded USD tools, and a treasure trove of other editing and effects goodies. DaVinci Resolve 19 is a game-changer, and it's clear Blackmagic Design is staying put at the forefront of content creation. You could add a Blackmagic or even Atomos recorder and have a much more usable interface for that kind of thing.

Shoot Incredible High Dynamic Range (HDR) Images

Definitely not handheld and doing that will result in all kinds of artefacts. The first BMPCC was actually pocketable (sans lens) but as the next generations grew, the name just stuck. LOL there only one I have heard of before was Pocket Battleship.

With that said, there are things the BMD system does that are better than others, but you must also remember, BMD cameras are not hybrids. They shoot video, an although some BMD cams can pseudo take stills, but with no mechanical shutter, they do this subpar at best. Venus Optic (Laowa) was kind enough to send us a copy of their new zoom lens.

It’s a nice safety net, though not one you want to test if you can avoid it. Like the original Pocket 6K, the BMPCC 6K Pro uses an active EF lens mount and features a Super35 CMOS sensor. It shoots 6K raw at all standard frame rates up to 60 frames per second; 4K raw up to 30 fps; and HD or 4K, ProRes 422 (HQ, LT, or Proxy) up to 60 fps. All those formats and frame rates provide a lot of flexibility, though most of my own project specs ask for either 6K raw or 4K ProRes 422HQ at 23.98 fps. Like all recent versions of the Pocket Camera including the 4K version, the dual-native ISO is good for low-light and 13 stops of dynamic range are ideal for HDR images.

12bit dng RAW is superior to BRAW and ProResRAW - the price you pay is the large file sizes. BRAW and ProResRAW were concocted to get around the patents about compressing true RAW video, so you get smaller file sizes with mystery processing of RAW in camera or recorder. The LCD on the fp is superior to that on the BMPCC4K or6K - it is actually visible in bright light. The fp has much better battery life and is much, much smaller.

In addition to shooting video, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K can also capture high resolution stills. Simply press the dedicated stills button to record 24.6 megapixel images. Still images are saved as Blackmagic RAW, so you get a very high image quality, which is perfect for making high resolution professional prints or for later editing in DaVinci Resolve. Digital film cameras shoot logarithmic colorspace to preserve the dynamic range, which is great for later post production, however when these files are viewed on a monitor they can look flat and washed out. 3D LUTs solve this problem because they allow you to apply a "look" to the monitor so you get an idea of how the finished images will look when editing. LUTs can be applied temporarily for monitoring only, or they can be recorded into the Blackmagic RAW files for use in post production.

The image quality of the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is equal to or better than the other cameras in its price range. In fact, you won’t find RAW in any other camera even close to $1,300. With that said, we wanted to test out the camera’s higher frame rates to see if the image quality suffered. While the sensor is cropped even more when shooting 120 fps in HD, it’s very sharp and the image quality is fantastic. Because of its sweet $2,495 price tag, this is also an excellent camera for anyone looking to graduate to a professional cinema camera from something like a DSLR or an all-in-one camcorder. That said, I wouldn’t suggest the Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro for absolute beginners; they might find themselves frustrated by its lack of auto, well, anything.

Further separating the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K from would-be competitors is that Blackmagic Design isn’t just a camera company. In fact, up until about six years ago, it wasn’t even a camera company. Before then, it was best known for its DaVinci Resolve color grading software — originally sold as a $20,000 suite complete with bespoke hardware interface.

Rather than bombard the user with every physical button they could possibly need, the 6K Pro keeps things minimal. For almost everyone else, the L mount is a lifesaver. In addition to the wide array of lenses available for L-mounts specifically, there’s a huge market of lenses that are compatible via adapters, including most lenses you might already have. If you’re considering upgrading to a full-frame cinema camera, you’ll have a hard time finding more lens options than on this one. For example, Canon’s popular EF mount—and the mount used on previous Blackmagic cameras—had a flange focal distance of 44 mm.

Our conversation centered around the exciting new features in Maxon One and the company's commitment to empowering creators of all levels. The Sony cameras have autofocus with the right lenses. Does this have even a rudimentary autofocus system?
