A Brief History of The Robie House by Frank Lloyd Wright
It is a stunning masterpiece of architecture and stands as one of the most recognizable buildings in Europe. The great dome that covers the structure was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and completed in 1436 – making it one of the oldest domes still standing today. The primary bedroom has a built-in fireplace and an on-suit bathroom, a luxury that was relatively uncommon for the time. The combination of so much glass and lack of internal structural columns resulted in an airy space that appeared larger than it is, accenting the open plan Wright favored. Two additional bedrooms and a full bathroom are located on the north side of this floor. Dresser drawers are built into the walls of the bedrooms underneath the windows, and project into the eave spaces. A massive fireplace divides the living and dining rooms and connects all three floors, as does a central stairway.

The ground floor of the house features an entrance hall, two private rooms for the family, including a playroom for the Robie children, and a three-car garage, an innovation that highlights the growing importance of the automobile. The expansive main living area is raised above ground level, providing light, space, and privacy for the family. The kitchen and servants quarters are also on this main level, while the family bedrooms are located on the smaller third floor. The Robie House features a partially hidden main entrance on the northwest side, creating a sense of privacy and protection for the residents. The entrance hall is intentionally low-ceilinged and dark, but the stairs to the second floor provide a sense of anticipation as the visitor moves upward. Once upstairs, the light-filled living and dining rooms create a sharp contrast to the dark entrance hall, making them feel even more special.

The open plan design was revolutionary for the time, and created a modern, flexible living space for the Robie family, consisting of a dining area and a living area. Art glass doors and windows line the rooms of the Robie House, flooding the interiors with natural light. The windows feature geometric patterns that suggest plant forms, while also incorporating geometric elements found in the plan of the house.
